Online video service Hulu has ordered a small-screen adaptation of Stephen King's Kennedy assassination novel "11/22/63," to be made by blockbuster director J.J. Abrams, it said Monday.

The bestselling author's book, in which the narrator goes back in time to prevent the 1963 killing of the US president, will be made into nine hour-long episodes of TV drama

"This direct-to-series order marks a monumental deal for Hulu as we partner with J.J. Abrams and Stephen King, two of the most celebrated storytellers of our time," said Hulu executive Craig Erwich.

"We are thrilled to be working with them ... to bring this unique take on one of the most seminal historic events of the 20th century to Hulu," he added.

The series will be made by Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, with executive producer/writer Bridget Carpenter and Warner Bros Television.

King's award-winning 2011 novel tells the story of a teacher who goes back in time to try to change the course of history, in what becomes part thriller and part love story.
