It's been a while since Asus completely stopped launching budget and premium smartphones in India. For a few years now, the company has been focusing only on its ROG smartphone lineup catering to the gaming crowd. The ROG Phone 5 offers good hardware but it's aimed at a niche audience, and Asus hasn't really had anything else for the rest of the market in India. That's all about to change now. The Asus 8z might sound familiar, and that's because this phone was announced in 2021. Known internationally as the ZenFone 8, it was all set to launch in India as the 8z (due to a trademark dispute). Asus says it held back this phone's launch until now because of the pandemic and supply chain issues, but it's finally available.

Asus 8z mobile was launched on 28th February 2022. The phone comes with a 120 Hz refresh rate 5.90-inch touchscreen display offering a resolution of 1080x2400 pixels at a pixel density of 445 pixels per inch (ppi) and an aspect ratio of 20:9. The display sports Gorilla Glass for protection. Asus 8z is powered by a 2.84GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. It comes with 8GB of RAM. The Asus 8z runs Android 12 and is powered by a 4000mAh battery. The Asus 8z supports proprietary fast charging.

As far as the cameras are concerned, the Asus 8z on the rear packs a triple camera setup featuring a 64-megapixel (f/1.8, 0.8-micron) primary camera, and a 12-megapixel (f/2.2, 1.4-micron) camera. The rear camera setup has phase detection autofocus. It has a single front camera setup for selfies, featuring a 12-megapixel sensor with an f/2.45 aperture and a pixel size of 1.22-micron. The front camera also features autofocus.

Asus 8z is based on Android 12 and packs 128GB of inbuilt storage. The Asus 8z is a dual-SIM (GSM and GSM) mobile that accepts Nano-SIM and Nano-SIM cards. The Asus 8z measures 148.00 x 68.50 x 8.90mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 169.00 grams. It was launched in Horizon Silver and Obsidian Black colours. It features an IP68 rating for dust and water protection.

Connectivity options on the Asus 8z include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, GPS, Bluetooth v5.20, NFC, USB Type-C, FM radio, 3G, 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India) , and 5G. Sensors on the phone include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, compass/ magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and in-display fingerprint sensor. The Asus 8z supports face unlock.

Love the size, performance, and battery life

Bought it because it is the among the smaller phones out there. Love the size, the battery life is decent runs almost 1.5 days without charge, with moderate use and 2 with minimum use. The camera is nice. It is good enough at this price range and does not have too much bloatware. Only wish Asus would give longer OS support.

Wanted a Black Asus 8z, but they have not been available for quite some time. So I had to settle for the Silver option but quite happy with the looks. Especially loving the small form factor. Display of the phone is amazing and so is the camera. Not using the finger print sensor as it's inaccurate most of the times and so is the face unlock. Settling for pin unlock. Haptics are good. No major heating issues observed under normal conditions. Does heat up a bit during charging but this happens with all the phones. Not complaining about the battery life, it's good enough for me as I am not a heavy user and a non gamer. Gesture controls are good too. Common accessories such as back cover cases are not widely available for this model. The case provided is sturdy but slippery. So had to opt for a cheap silicone case available on Flipkart. In all a good phone if looking for a small phone with a powerful processor and you are not finicky about the finger print sensor and face unlock ID. Am using the battery charging limit of 90 % to keep the battery healthy. Happy with my purchase as did not want to use the bricks offered by other brands.
