One of the top features on premium smartphones has been fast charging support, and Qualcomm has just announced its latest solution. The Quick Charge 4+ charging protocol promises improvements over Quick Charge 4.0 which was announced back last year in November alongside the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. Qualcomm also confirmed that the first device featuring Quick Charge 4+ was announced by nubia.
The chipset maker has been steadily improving its Quick Charge tech for smartphones, and claims that the latest version brings three major enhancements over the last one. The company confirms that the all-new Quick Charge 4+ includes all the features of Quick Charge 4, and also adds three enhancements.
It brings Dual Charge, a feature already available in earlier versions, with some upgrades as it will include a second power management IC in the device. This is expected to manage lower thermal dissipation and reduced charging time. Second feature is Intelligent Thermal Balancing which has been developed to eliminate hot spots for optimised power delivery. Lastly, the Quick Charge 4+ brings improvements to the already existing built-in safety protocols. Quick Charge 4+ has been designed to monitor both the case and connector temperature levels simultaneously. This will mean that the new Quick Charge version can help against overheating and short-circuit or damage to the Type-C connector.
Apart from these changes, the new Quick Charge 4+ has capability to charge up to 15 percent faster or up to 30 percent more efficiently when compared to Quick Charge 4.
Qualcomm adds that accessories like wall adapters, car chargers, portable battery banks, and USB hubs can qualify for Quick Charge 4+. The accessories will also support backward compatibility with Quick Charge 3.0 and Quick Charge 2.0.
