Amazon India, along with the release of the Microsoft Xbox One console in the country on September 23, kicked off the new Release Day Delivery or RDD service.

Meant for customers who pre-order highly-anticipated products, the Release Day Delivery service delivers the product on launch day. Of course, this service does not apply to all Amazon items that are pre-orderable, and will only be available in select cities. The service was introduced with the video game category, and will be made available for other categories soon.

While Amazon has not detailed the cities where the service will be available, it claimed earlier on Tuesday to be delivering the Xbox One console during the course of day in more than 35 cities, apart from making midnight deliveries in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad and Nagpur, shortly after the console's India launch at 12:00am.

"I had pre-ordered the Xbox One for my son as a surprise. I just couldn't wait to gift it to him. The midnight delivery was a super surprise. He was just overjoyed to see the package arrive at midnight. He just couldn't believe it," said Faiza Hakim, from Bangalore when she received the Xbox One just after midnight.

The pre-orders for the Xbox One (Review) began on August 6, exclusively via Amazon.in.

"We know how eager customers are to lay their hands on new releases. We cannot think of a better way to 'Deliver Smiles'. We are absolutely delighted by the response we got and look forward to offering more delightful experiences for our customers." said Amit Agarwal, Vice President and Country Manager, Amazon India at the time of launch.
