Nikon's 36-megapixel DSLR, the Nikon D800, has hit the Indian shores. The camera was one of the three cameras unveiled by Nikon in India at a press event in Delhi on Wednesday.

The India launch of the D800 comes hot on the heels of the global announcement, with the camera still listed as 'available for pre-order' on Amazon US.

The Nikon D800 is accompanied by the D800E, which is different from the D800 only in regards to the fact that it comes without a stock low pass filter on top of the sensor.

The key features of the camera are:

  • FX-format CMOS sensor with 36.3 effective megapixels
  • EXPEED 3 image-processing engine for speed, versatility, and high performance
  • Standard ISO 100 to ISO 6400, range expandable to ISO 50 to 25600 equivalent
  • Unique 910,000 RGB matrix metering mode coupled up with a 51 point AF system
  • Video recording at full HD resolution (1920x1080 at 30, 25 and 24 fps) and 720p (1280x720 at 60, 50, 30 and 25 fps)

The D800 and the D800E are now available at Rs. 1,49,950 and Rs. 1,64,950 respectively. That's pretty competitive pricing given the INR-USD exchange rate and the US retail prices of $3000 and $3300 respectively.
