Evernote today announced the acquisition of the iPad handwriting application Penultimate. The $0.99 app, which is the fourth best-selling iPad app of all time will continue to remain a separate paid app on the iTunes store.

Penultimate is bound to get many improvements including sync integration with Evernote and search capabilities. Penultimate's app design resembles a physical notebook wherein users can either use their fingers or a stylus to take notes. Users can choose from a variety of paper types, ink colors and line thicknesses. A single tap allows users to save Penultimate notes directly to Evernote.

Evernote's blog mentions that Ben Zotto, the man behind Penultimate will join the Evernote team to help the note taking app expand its handwriting features. He also said that Penultimate will be coming to other devices as well, a supreme advantage already favouring  Evernote which is present on almost every major mobile platform.

Speaking of the acquisition, Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote said, " For the first time ever, writing on a tablet is really great, which is why we chose this moment to make the acquisition. We have big plans for Penultimate that will both enhance the app and bring more capabilities into Evernote. It's already the best handwriting app out there, and it's only just getting started."

Evernote had earlier acquired image editing app Skitch, which went from being a paid app to free for all post acquisition.
