Amazon India is holding an event on Wednesday where it is expected to announce the Fire TV Stick. Given the rise of online streaming in the country thanks to the likes of Hotstar, Netflix and the recently launched Prime Video, Amazon is looking to cash in by bringing its Fire TV Stick to the Indian market.

Amazon's Fire TV Stick is essentially and pen drive-like device that turns any old TV into a smart TV. It competes directly against streaming products like Chromecast and Apple TV, among others. It is one of the more budget streaming media players out there that lets you stream content from apps like Prime Video, Netflix and YouTube, among others. Amazon in December last year launched its Prime Video streaming service in India, which is included as part of Amazon Prime membership that costs Rs. 499 per year, and the Fire TV Stick will be the 'official' way of watching all that content on your big screen TV.

Although details are slim at the moment, the Fire TV Stick will certainly be available through Amazon India. Gadgets 360 understand it will be available via offline retailers well. It is also unknown as to whether the new Fire TV Stick will get Alexa support as it does in the US. Notably, the current generation Apple TV in India is also yet to get Siri support. The stick can be plugged into to a TV via the HDMI port after which you'll be able to stream content, browse apps, play games and more. Second-gen Fire TV Stick features a quad-core processor with Wi-Fi connectivity and 1080p streaming.

Amazon could also throw in a free Prime subscription along with the purchase of the Fire TV Stick as an introductory offer, or offer Fire TV Stick at a discount for Prime members. However, we will only know this for sure once the event takes place on Wednesday. Notably, Prime Video seems to have an edge over Netflix in India when it comes to subscription cost, regional and original Indian content and its popularity is only expected to get bigger once the Fire TV Stick becomes available.
