Nokia has been trying hard to make its mark in the smartphone race. The company had earlier launched its high-end and mid-range Windows Phone 8 offerings in the form of Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. The Finnish giant now seems to be gunning for the budget smartphone market. It had launched the Lumia 620 at the sub Rs. 15,000 price point in March 2013.

The company has now launched the Nokia Lumia 520 for Rs. 10,499. It is by far the cheapest Windows Phone 8 offering but does the smartphone make significant compromises to get to this price point? Or is it a good value buy? We find out in this review.

Build/ Design
Nokia Lumia 520 follows the same design philosophy as its other Lumia siblings. It comes in a host of colours such as yellow, blue, red along with the usual black and white. You can also change the rear casing (at an extra cost) in order to the match the colour of your smartphone as per your mood. We got our hands on a yellow unit.

Pros : - · Thinner than expected and feels good in hands · Camera does a good job, a lot of innovative lenses to choose from. · Silky smooth UI which never hangs · Highly responsive touch, works even with gloves on · Games never hang or lag · Offline maps with Nokia Here works smoothly (Still Google maps are better) · Nokia music lets you download all latest and old songs direct to the phone. Even regional language songs. · Full MS office suit. · Build quality is awesome with a mat finish on its back which gives a firm grip. Cons:- · Comparatively less apps that android. But almost all required apps are present. · No High end gaming as of now due to the 512 ram limitation.

  • Nokia Lumia 520 Pros and cons
Rajib Das (Aug 23, 2014) on Gadgets 360
I am using this phone for a year now. Nokia introduced Lumia just before its fall in the market and being a Windows phone it raised curiosity regarding its capacity as compared to other manufacturers. The mobile is really good for certain things and yet misses some basic things. Following are the Pros and Cons I think may help future buyers: Pros: 1. Touch sensitivity- The screen responses very well to touch. Touch sensitivity is very good. 2. Camera- The 5 MP rear camera is very good. Nokia advertised Lumia camera as one which takes good image even at low light and it justifies too. Low light photos comes really very good. The mobile does not have a flash but still such a good camera will never disappoint you. The Nokia camera apps makes the use of camera even more enjoyable as I can change the focus to manual, auto or infinity settings which can give u a focused object with blur background. Many other settings are available too. The camera also allows to capture video at 720 p (HD) and I have used it many times as its take really good quality video as compared to other expensive phones. 3. The size (4") feels very handy for the palm. 4. Apps: Both Nokia and Windows provide many apps which will suffice the need of most users. Starting from railways site to banking, fitness monitoring, almost all apps are there. 5. Settings: Its easy to change most used settings like silent to General, Volume, play or pause music even when screen is locked. Even other settings like theme, background, ringtone are easy. 6. Navigation and Map: GPS of Lumia 520 really works very fast ( fast means really very quick as compared to other phones I have used). It takes as less as 20-30 sec to lock the position. You will appreciate it only when you will use it after using navigation in other phones. I uses Here Map ( Free Nokia Map) most of the time for finding location and it has never failed. 7. Sound (speaker, headphone): sound quality in both speaker and headphone mode is not vet loud but enough for music and conversation. 8. Built quality: The built quality is good as one can expect from Nokia. My phone has fallen many times from hand but still ok. 9. Games: many games are available from Xbox and Nokia. I have played Temple run and the response was smooth. 10. Price: Price is appropriate for the phone. CONS: 1. Lack of basic features: The mobile lacks many basic features like no call recording facility, no video calling capability (as no front camera available), network information (like network location/place as it comes in other phones when its available), night mode, miss call/sms alert. Clubbing of SMSs as per sender and not per Date. 2. Screen resolution: Screen resolution is not very sharp, which you may notice while watching Youtube videos. 3. File Manager: No file manager app or inbuilt setting is available. only storage space can be monitored. 4. On the screen a search button is dedicated for Bing, which is hardly ever used.

  • excellent deal, now at lower price.
Ashish Sharma (May 31, 2014) on Gadgets 360
everybody knows that the Nokia Lumia 520 is a great phone no doubt, but now at the reduced price online of about 7-8K omg!!! this phone is a killer. all new fresh nokia Lumia windows feel and that too now upgradable to windows 8.1 with all new Cortana voice assistance and many more upgrades. pros- 1. excellent looks, the phone looks decent not too big not too small fits right in hand and has a classy finish with multiple options for back panels in vivid colors. 2. camera is wow. it lacks flash so the low light experience is not that good but the shooter clicks excellent photos and now with new windows app for camera it performs very good, with new features you will love. 3.good battery though specs are low but it doesn't drain like it does in androids. 4. top of all latest 8.1 upgrades. this is the best deal of all, seriously the Cortana is amazing and it assists quite impressively, 8.1 has new drop down notification screen, latest maps and camera app. if you want a windows phone for a starter for less than 8K just go for this phone blind folded you will never regret. this phone gives you the best experience of windows platform at such a low price.

  • LUMIA 520- A value for money windows 8 Smartphone !
Ishan Ganjoo (May 30, 2014) on Gadgets 360
The Nokia Lumia 520 was the fifth Windows Phone 8 handset from the Finnish firm and it slots into the very bottom end of the range, just below the Nokia Lumia 620. ->Design: Like all recent Nokia handsets there's a lot of colour in the Nokia Lumia 520. It shares the look of other Lumia devices, with a single piece of smooth plastic covering the back and sides of the phone. That shell is available in black or white, but the bright shades of yellow, blue and red on offer will appeal if you like it loud. If nothing else, it makes Nokia handsets stand out from the crowd. Regardless of the colour, it's quite a nice looking phone in other ways, with an angular, rectangular design more in line with the higher end Nokia Lumia 920 than the curved edges of its closest relations ? the Nokia Lumia 620 and 625. -->Key features The Windows Phone 8 OS is still a distant third behind Android and iOS, so the consumer deck is already stacked against the Lumia 520, despite its success last year. However, the sheer value to be had here counts very strongly in the Lumia 520's favour, as does the build quality and some of the apps on offer. Having Microsoft Office and OneNote on board adds some serious value. Both of these apps are fairly feature rich, with Office in particular proving impressive as it lets you create, view and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations. -->Performance, internet and battery life The Nokia Lumia 520 features a Qualcomm MSM8227 dual-core processor running a 1GHz and backed by 512MB of RAM. Although looking a little dated on paper by now, it keeps the Windows Phone 8 OS running smoothly during day-to-day usage. There's an Adreno 305 GPU on board that will handle 3D games with passable results. The Nokia Lumia 520 comes with Wi-Fi and 3G as you'd expect and being a Windows Phone 8 handset your web browser choices are Internet Explorer and, er, Internet Explorer. Still, it's optimised for HTML 5 and isn't the worst mobile browser we've ever used, so that's not the end of the world. While the Lumia 620 would sometimes struggle to make it through a day, the Lumia 520 generally seemed fine ? though you'd still normally need to charge it overnight. -Camera The camera on the Nokia Lumia 520 is pretty basic, you get a 5MP sensor on the back, but it doesn't have any flash and there's no front facing camera at all ? so video chats and self portraits are out. There are limited options on the Lumia 520; you can adjust the ISO, white balance, aspect ratio and exposure value, as well as choose between several scene modes such as close-up, night or sports. --> Verdict The Lumia 520 looks good, it's got a decent screen both in terms of size and resolution, it rarely stutters or slows down, it's great for calls and messaging, reasonable for media and okay for photos. Combine that with a lower price tag (Rs. 7200) and I reckon that this just might be the best entry level Windows Phone 8 handset that you can buy and certainly the best value
