Google has started rolling out an update to its Maps Android app (version 9.1) adding contextual information about places you look up, including destinations selected when asking for directions.

Android Police has published a teardown of the Google Maps app for Android, listing features that appear in the strings of code. It notes, "In 9.1, Maps will provide helpful information about your destination or a location you look up."

The update will reportedly offer details such as the current weather and time at any destination or place that has been looked on the app. The report also claims that the app will also offer "some fun facts" about destinations, as seen in screenshot.

The teardown further reveals that the app will be able to respond to users' voice commands to show or hide traffic information. Some of the other features tipped by the teardown include information about rerouting and unexpected delays. Some of the strings spotted also hint that the app will be able to alert users about transit schedule changes.

The reports says, "There are also a handful of strings related to rerouting and unexpected delays, indicating that Maps will show users exactly how much time can be saved by rerouting, and alert them to various "route-around" situations like road closures."

Google earlier this month had announced that it would roll out a new Maps app revamped with its new Material Design philosophy to Android and iOS users. The update also included features such as making restaurant reservations from the app (only available in the US) and estimating the cost of taking an Uber.

The updated Google Maps app for Android and iOS is now available to download from Google Play and the App Store.
