Microsoft has started rolling out an update for its Skype app for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 platforms, adding several new features of which the most notable is location sharing.

The Skype version 2.22 for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 brings the 'save picture', 'notification controls for individual conversations' and the 'location sharing' features.

Users can now share their locations from within a chat window by taping on the + icon and selecting Share location with the people who are in the conversation. The recipients would see a Bing map showing the exact location of the user.

"Location sharing lets you have an even better chat experience on the go. Seeing friends or family and want to tell them where to meet you? Simply use this new feature to send them a Bing map of your location, pinpointing exactly where you are," states the official Skype blog post.

The Skype for Windows Phone users can now also save images from a chat conversation onto their handsets by tapping on the image and navigating to the Save photo option. The option can be found under the More menu.

Lastly, the Skype app update enables users to control notifications for individual conversations. In a particular chat window, the users can navigate to their Notifications section under the More menu and can choose to turn on/off that particular chat's notifications.

The update is only Windows Phone exclusive and is yet to reach the Android and iOS platforms. The updated Skype app can be downloaded from the Windows Phone Store.

Microsoft also updated its Skype app for modern Windows in July by introducing the free group calling feature. The update let users call up to 10 people for free. Earlier the feature was only available to Skype Premium subscribers.
