During MWC 2014, Sony had announced its latest flagship Xperia Z2, and since then, the company has been expected to launch the mini version of the same, just like its predecessor's Xperia Z1 Compact. According to reports, the 'mini' version of the Xperia Z2 smartphone will be called Xperia Z2 Compact (and Xperia A2 in Japan).

The smartphone has purportedly been spotted in a NTT DoCoMo brochure, and was reported by Xperiablog via smhn. The alleged compact variant of the flagship is rumoured to arrive on Japan's NTT Docomo this summer.

The smartphone appeared in the leaked document is said to be the alleged 'mini' variant of the Sony Xperia Z2, named as Xperia A2 SO-03F (development code name: Altair). It is said to come in four colour variants - Grey Black, White, Lavender, and Orange.

The reported specifications suggest that the Sony Xperia A2 (or Sony Xperia Z2 Compact) will feature a similar 4.3-inch (720x1280 pixels) display as on the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. It will also be powered by a similar 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (or 801 - MSM8974) processor along with 2GB of RAM, like the predecessor.

It is also said to pack a similar 20.7-megapixel camera and front 2.2-megapixel camera as the Xperia Z2, according to the Japanese website. It is rumoured to come with 16GB of inbuilt storage, but there is no word on expandability. The reported dimensions of the alleged successor to the Z1 Compact are 128mmx65mmx9.6mm.

Earlier the smartphone was spotted in a FCC certification, where it was codenamed as Sony SO-04F "Altair".

The Sony Xperia Z2 runs Android 4.4. KitKat, and features a 5.2-inch (1080x1920 pixels) display. It is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974AB) processor with an Adreno 330 GPU, the Xperia Z2 features 3GB of RAM.

Notably, ahead of the Xperia Z1 Compact's global unveiling at CES 2014, the tech industry expected the device to be called the Xperia Z1s, as the international variant of the Xperia Z1 f Japanese that went official under NTT DoCoMo in October. Similarly, the news of the Xperia Z2 Compact sporting a different name for the Japanese version (Xperia A2), seems likely.
