SanDisk on Wednesday launched two new 256GB microSD cards, with one it claims is the fastest in its class - the 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-1. The company alongside also launched the 256GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-1 Premium Edition, which is only slightly slower.

Both cards will be available globally, SanDisk said, with the faster Extreme version priced at $199.99 (roughly Rs. 13,500) and becoming available in Q4 2016, and the Ultra version priced at $149.99 (roughly Rs. 10,100) and becoming available in August.

The Western Digital-owned company said the 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-1 offers transfer speeds of up to 100MB/s and write speeds of up to 90MB/s. This kind of an offering is aimed for the customers who want to record and store 4K videos. The 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-I card is estimated to store up to 14 hours of 4K footage from smartphones or any other camera.

The 256GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card Premium Edition on the other hand offers transfer speeds of up to 95MB/s (the company has not provided write speeds). Both the cards are waterproof as well as temperature-proof, shock proof, and X-ray proof.

Samsung had last month announced its Evo Plus 256GB microSD card to overtake SanDisk as the highest external memory offering on smartphone, tablets, and other compatible devices. Before the launch of Samsung's card, SanDisk's 200GB microSD card was the highest capacity external memory offering in the market
