In a new development, Motorola has registered the Moto Z trademark with the US Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO). The Lenovo-owned company was already expected to ditch the Moto X brand and replace it with Moto Z.

We first heard the demise of Moto X from noted tipster Evan Blass aka evleaks. Now, the Moto Z trademark has been approved by the USPTO (via Droid Life), pretty much cementing the demise of Moto X. The name was trademarked for use on "mobile phones, smartphones and accessories therefore, namely battery chargers and adapters." The company was already reported to be looking to launch two smartphones under the new 'Z' series namely Moto Z, and Moto Z Play.

Motorola certainly managed to grab headlines last week when it released an teaser video for its June 9 launch at Lenovo Tech World, a video that showed a nostalgic look at one of the company's most popular phones ever - the Moto Razr. This caused a riot of speculation that Motorola would bring back its iconic flip phone in a new avatar. However, the company may just be generating interest in its brand ahead of its official reveal in June, making a play on the letter 'Z', or even pointing to the razor-slim nature of one of the two rumoured phones, the Moto Z - supposedly codenamed Vertex Thin.

The Moto Z aka Vector Thin is said to feature a 5.5-inch QHD display, a Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 16-megapixel rear camera, 32GB of inbuilt storage, and 2600mAh battery. Meanwhile, the Moto Z Play aka Vertex is expected to sport a 5.5-inch full-HD display, a Snapdragon 625 SoC, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera, 16GB and 32GB storage variants, and pack a 3500mAh battery.

Motorola is reportedlyalso introducing its MotoMods aka Amps module lineup alongside the two smartphones. The Moto Z and Moto Z Play will have 16-pin connectors at the back to attach modular backplates. These backplates aka MotoMods bring various utilities like - optical zoom, stereo speakers, wide angle lens, battery pack, and even a pico projector.

A leaked invite for the June 9 event has also surfaced on the Web. For now, the June 9 event official will see the launch of the "world's first consumer Project Tango-enabled smartphone in partnership with Google." The company in its press release had also hinted at new products from Motorola, saying - "Lenovo will also announce new mobile technology designed by Motorola that will dramatically change the way people think about and use their most personal devices - in a snap."
