Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt announced at the Motorola press event on Wednesday that 1.3 million Android devices are being activated each day. He also revealed that 70,000 of these devices are Android tablets.

The Android device activations are up by 300,000 since the number was announced back in June at Google I/O developer conference.

Schmidt also stated that the total install base of Android is now nearing 500 million, as it currently stands at 480 million devices. The install base is also up by 80 million devices during the period since June.

The Android operating system was officially unveiled in 2007 with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance and in just a span of five years; the OS has become the top smartphone platform globally.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Android amassed a commanding 68.1% market share of all smartphones shipped during the last quarter.
