E-commerce major Flipkart on Thursday entered the furniture segment, offering over 10,000 items to shop from under its 'home' category.

Customers can shop for furniture products priced between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,50,000 with free shipping and installation, Flipkart said in a statement.

The category aims to provide customers with the largest selection of contemporary, new-age, traditional, and region-specific furniture, it said.

Flipkart has tied up with large format home retailers like HomeTown, Durian, @Home & Homestop along with regional sellers across the country to offer consumers more variety.

For now, large furniture will be available for customers in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru which will be extended across the country in the coming months, it added.

Ankit Nagori, Chief Business Officer, Flipkart, said the Rs. 1,40,000-crore Indian furniture market is highly fragmented with products from different manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.

He said while furniture is often viewed as an offline category, research shows that customers are increasingly opting for furniture shopping online.

"We foresee furniture becoming one of the largest drivers for our home category."

Over the next one year, Flipkart aimed to introduce more selection and brands and scale up furniture for customers to shop from, it said.

Flipkart late last month announced the launch of 20 'experience zones' across the country, which will enable its 'Click and Collect' feature, letting consumers pick up their orders.

"Flipkart's alternate delivery model will allow customers to walk into their nearest experience centre and collect their shipments at their convenient time." Flipkart said in a statement.
