Apple has added a dedicated section for selfies on its iTunes App Store, called Sharing Selfies. The new section added on Thursday promotes apps for the sharing of selfies.

The 'Sharing Selfies' section is temporary and is featured on the front page of the iTunes App Store on both iOS and the desktop iTunes application.

It includes various selfie sharing apps (both free and paid) like Snapchat, Shots, Frontback, Picr, Everyday, Samba, Facetune and few others. The complete list of 12 different apps can be found on the iTunes App Store. The section joins other iTunes App Store lists like "Best New Apps" and "Spectacular Stories: Games."

The word 'selfie' has become commonplace enough that Oxford Dictionaries announced it to be the word of the year for 2013, while it gained worldwide acceptance in 2002.

The term 'selfie' is defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website".

The Cupertino company is not the only tech giant that has acknowledged the power of a 'selfie'. Recently Samsung also tried to establish some connection, when its sponsored 'Oscars selfie' clicked quickly went viral on social media, becoming the most-retweeted Twitter post ever. Post the hype, Samsung had commented, "the Oscars selfie that went viral was a surprise for everyone."

The Wall Street Journal reported that the 'Oscars selfie' stunt "wasn't entirely unplanned," saying that a Samsung smartphone was used in the show as part of a sponsorship and $20 million advertising deal with Oscar broadcasters ABC.
